Math and Literacy Tutors Needed for A+ Scholars
Houston A+ Challenge is now accepting applications for passionate, qualified individuals to serve as mathematics and literacy tutors for A+ Scholars at six Challenge Network middle schools across the Houston region.
Tutors will work under the direction of the campus-based A+ Performance Coach to improve student achievement in mathematics and/or literacy, by providing one-on-one and small group guidance to struggling students or those who need to be challenged to reach higher levels of achievement. Tutors will provide targeted intervention for select students to ensure that all students are mastering the curriculum at levels to be on track for post-secondary success.
Houston A+ Challenge launched the Challenge Network in 2010 to help Houston-area public schools prepare more students for post-secondary success.
New research shows that middle school students who simply pass state tests in 8th grade may have as low as a 15 percent chance of being on track for post-secondary success by the time they are in 11th grade. Students who achieve at higher levels in 8th grade are UP TO FIVE TIMES AS LIKELY to remain on track for success through high school, and graduate prepared for college and a well-paying career.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Work one-on-one or in small groups to give individualized instruction to struggling students
- Develop positive relationships with students and motivate them to do their best
- Meet weekly with the Performance Coach and teachers to discuss the progress of the students
- Meet monthly with the principal to discuss the progress of the students
- Perform other duties, as appropriate and agreed upon with the Performance Coach, related to math or literacy development of students on that campus

Salary Information: Hourly, $12 per hour
Hours: Flexible, can be determined upon discussion. Need exists for tutors who can provide from a few hours a week to tutors who can engage 20-30 hours a week.
